Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Ukraine, Sumy
The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Catholic church in the Gothic style, built of red brick in 1911 on land donated by sugar refiner Pavel Kharitonenko for use by the Catholic community of the city of Sumy. The lancet arch above the entrance to the church is decorated with turrets along the edges of its roof, and a small bell tower rises in the middle. An organ was installed in the church, which disappeared during the Soviet era. After the church was closed in 1932, its building housed a museum of local lore, then a gym. In 1994, the temple was returned to the Catholics. The solemn consecration of the temple took place on March 25, 1998, on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is a Catholic exhibition center at the church.
