On August 24.2002, at that time, the only monument in Ukraine to the soldiers-internationalists was opened in the park near the cathedral. That is, not only to those who fought in Afghanistan, but also to those soldiers of the Soviet army from Severodonetsk, who in 22 countries of the world fulfilled their international duty to the Fatherland. 24 granite mourning tablets from "A to Z" - from Algeria to Japan - are embedded in the wall of the memorial along the perimeter from three sides. And in the center, near the semicircular wall, there is a chapel with a high, visible silhouette from afar. Under the slab with the inscription "Afghanistan 1979-1989" there are shell casings with earth taken from the graves of "Afghans" resting in the city cemetery. Similar shells were planned to be immured under each such slab of the memorial.
Every year, combatants gather near this memorial to honor the memory of the fallen and those who passed away in subsequent years, recall army everyday life, shake hands and just chat.
