Castle in Novomalin
Novomalinsky Castle
Ukraine, Rivne
8 km west of Mezherichi is the ancient village of Novomalin. In historical documents, it was first mentioned in 1392, when King Vladislav Jagiello "granted" this area to Svidrigail. Even then there was a small castle, significantly expanded at the beginning of the 15th century. At the end of the 18th century, the Novomalinsky estate became the property of the Sosnovsky magnates. Under them, the castle ensemble acquired the features of secular architecture and was considered one of the most beautiful residences in Volhynia. In 1866, the provincial newspaper wrote: "Now the castle has been rebuilt into a palace ... surrounded on three sides by the waters of the lake, on the fourth side it adjoins the mainland and is separated from it by a moat, through which there is a stone bridge, which was once a lift."
In the 17th century, a beautiful chapel was erected on the foundation of one of the defensive towers. This explains its unusual, pentagonal shape. At the beginning of the 19th century, the chapel was decorated with pseudo-Gothic detailing and five high towers at the corners. The author of this original idea was the owner of the estate himself - the sculptor Tomasz-Oskar Sosnowski.
Unfortunately, the castle has survived to this day in a very deplorable state. Today it is only picturesque ruins. Defensive towers, the first floor of the palace and underground casemates have been partially preserved. The locals use the premises on the ground floor for... storage of manure. The best preserved chapel. Until now, its tall towers rise majestically into the sky.
