The Holy Assumption Cathedral, whose domes and bell tower are visible miles from Poltava, is located on
Ivanova Gora — Cathedral Square. The first stone cathedral of Poltava was built in the Baroque style from 1748 to 1770 on the site of the wooden Assumption Church. Initially a three-domed cathedral, after the restructuring of 1780, it became a five-domed one. In 1774, the construction of the bell tower was started, which was delayed due to lack of funds and was completed in 1801. Since 1847, after the transfer of the episcopal chair from Pereyaslav to Poltava, the cathedral became a cathedral.
The cathedral was destroyed in 1934, but the bell tower survived. Since 2000, work began on the restoration of the cathedral. On May 9, 2004, 7 new bells were installed on the bell tower. The restored cathedral was consecrated on May 21, 2011, although due to cost savings, its height was reduced by 7 meters from the original. Nevertheless, the architectural ensemble of the cathedral is one of the most memorable symbols of Poltava.
