St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church
Ukraine, Poltava
The Nicholas Church in Dikanka is the ancestral temple-tomb of the Kochubeev family, an architectural monument of the late 18th century of national importance. The stone church was built in 1794 on the estate of Count V.P. Kochubey on the site of an old wooden church built in the 17th century where, according to legend, there was a stump on which the icon of St. Nicholas appeared. The temple, designed by architect N.A. Lvov, was built in the form of a rotunda, with columns along the facade, with a Doric portico with a triangular pediment at the entrance. During the construction, the double dome system was used for the first time, which was later used for the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg and which contributed to better acoustics and better lighting. In 1851-1852, a crypt with marble sarcophagi was built under the church, in which several generations of Kochubeys are now buried. At the same time, a unique carved bog oak iconostasis was installed. In 1827, the construction of a two-tier stone bell tower was completed according to the project of the famous architect Luigi Rusca. At one time, among the many pilgrims in the Nicholas Church was Maria Gogol-Yanovskaya - the future mother of the great writer Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, who also attended the Nicholas Church in childhood.
