Poltava Museum of Local Lore named after Vasily Krychevsky is an architectural monument in the Ukrainian Art Nouveau style, one of the largest museums in Ukraine. The museum is located in the former building of the offices of the provincial zemstvo, built by the famous architect and artist V.G. Krichevsky. The interior painting was done by artists S.I. Vasilkovsky and N.S. Samokish. The exposition of the museum was based on the collections of soils and plants collected in 1888-92 in the Poltava region by the expedition of V.V. Dokuchaev. Today, more than 300,000 exhibits are stored in museum halls and storerooms. Among the rarities are the ancient Egyptian collection, works of ancient and oriental art, Cossack relics. The department of archeology of the museum conducts archaeological research in the Poltava region together with scientists from the Poltava National Pedagogical University named after V. G. Korolenko.
