Monument at the resting place of Peter I
Monument at the Holy Order of Peter I
Ukraine, Poltava
The monument at the resting place of Peter I was erected where the house of the Cossack Magdenko was located, in which the commandant of the Poltava fortress A.S. Kelin lodged, and in which the Russian emperor stopped to rest after the Battle of Poltava.
The monument was built in 1849 instead of the brick obelisk previously installed here. The monument is a granite pedestal with a rectangular three-tiered cast-iron obelisk topped with a helmet with a winner's laurel wreath and a sword on a shield.
All metal parts of the monument were made by a new, at that time, galvanoplasty method. The inscription on the pedestal reads: "Peter I rested here after his exploits on June 27, 1709."
The author of the monument is the famous architect Alexander Bryullov, brother of the famous artist Karl Bryullov.
