The Holy Assumption Cathedral in Odessa is one of the largest churches in the city of Odessa and southern Ukraine. From 1936 to 2002 it was the cathedral church of the Odessa diocese. It was founded on June 17, 1855, and construction was completed in 1869, and in the same year it was consecrated by His Grace Dmitry (Muretov), Archbishop of Kherson and Odessa. The two-story church was built at the expense of the merchants Jacob and Nikolai Cherepennikovs according to the project of the architect L. Ts. Otton. The height of the temple together with the bell tower is 56 m, the capacity is 5-6 thousand parishioners.
The temple consists of two sections: upper and lower, with three altars in each. The southern aisle of the upper church was consecrated in honor of St. Jacob, Severny - in the name of the Monk Xenia. The lower church was consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas, its southern chapel - in the name of three Saints: St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom, Northern - in honor of the feast of the Entry into the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos.
