This monument evokes a wide range of feelings - from bewilderment to indignation in every tourist who has come to the Odessa Sea Terminal for the first time. Sharp-tongued townspeople behind the eyes call the statue "Rupture of the uterus" (sorry), there is also a more literary version - "Schwarzenegger in the womb. " I think that most of the giggling spectators, photographed against the background of a gigantic-sized bronze "baby", would be surprised to learn that this work is the creation of a world-famous sculptor - Ernst Neizvestny. The sculpture is called "Golden Child", it was presented by the author to eternally young Odessa on her 200th birthday. The history of the creation of the monument is interesting: as an eighteen-year-old youth during World War II, Ernst Neizvestny participated in the liberation of Odessa from Nazi invaders. Seeing the ruined and devastated city, he admired the fortitude of the unbroken fascist occupation of the Odessa citizens.
It was then that he had an association with a child who would be born and grow up to be a real hero. Just as Odessa, destroyed at that time, will be reborn, and will become a hundred times stronger and more beautiful than it was before ...The opportunity to translate his idea into material was given to the sculptor only after 50 years. By the way, Ernst Neizvestny claims that the "Golden Child" is almost the only sculpture that he created in a "bright, joyful, romantic way. " So let's not be too strict with the monumental bronze baby : ).
