Ukraine, Odesa
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the main Roman Catholic church in Odessa, an architectural monument of the mid-19th century in the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanic styles. The church, which has the shape of a Latin cross in plan, was consecrated on August 16, 1853 in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated by Catholics together with the Assumption. In 1935, the cathedral was closed, and a club was set up in it. Some valuable things from the cathedral were saved by transferring them to the Catholic Church of St. Peter. After the liberation of Odessa from the fascist invaders, the temple was rebuilt into a sports hall, for which the columns and altars were demolished inside. In 1991, the building of the church was returned to the Church, in 2002 the Odessa-Simferopol Roman Catholic diocese was formed, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary received the status of a cathedral in it. The former mayor of Odessa, Count A.F. Langeron, is buried in the cathedral.
