Church of St. Paul
St. Paul Kirche
Ukraine, Odesa
Church of St. Paul in Odessa - the cathedral and the chair of the Bishop of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ukraine - a historical building and architectural monument. St. Paul's Church was consecrated in 1827, and in 1897 a decision was made to overhaul it. The German architect G. Scheurembrand, who won the competition for reconstruction projects, gave the church features of the Gothic and Romanesque styles, built a 50-meter bell tower - the tallest building in Odessa at that time. Two years later, a pastor's house was built nearby. After the end of World War II, St. Paul's Church was used as a sports hall and warehouse, and in May 1976, after a severe fire, it completely burned down.
In October 1997, after the decision of the Odessa City Council to return the church to the Lutheran community, the restoration of the church began, which continued until 2010. Four bronze bells were installed on the church, the largest of them - the "Christ Bell" - weighs a ton. The church has a Steinmeyer organ with 27 registers, which can be listened to during services or at charity concerts.
