The Museum of Marine Painting bears the name of a local native artist Rufim Gavrilovich Sudkovsky, who was born in Ochakovo in 1850. The museum was opened in April 1982 as a department of the
Nikolaev Regional Art Museum. V.V.Vereshchagin, in the premises of the former barracks in the city center. A bust of Rufim Sudkovsky is installed in the museum lobby. The exposition of the museum, located in three halls, includes 663 paintings and drawings on the marine theme, starting from the second half of the 19th century.
A separate room is dedicated to the marine painter R. Sudkovsky, here you can see 25 of his paintings, sketches and pencil drawings. Among the interesting canvases, one can note the painting by I. Aivazovsky “Evening in Little Russia”. The grave of R.G.Sudkovsky, who died in 1885 from typhus, is located on the territory of
Nicholas Cathedral.
