The Lutheran stone church of the Apostle John was built in 1886 on the site of a burned-out wooden church of 1787, from which the history of the village of Staroshvedskoye, founded by Swedes-settlers, began. Now Staroshvedskoye, together with three other villages founded by colonists from Sweden and Germany, became part of the village of Zmievka. In 1929, at the height of the struggle against religion, the church was closed and turned into a fertilizer warehouse, and a significant part of the Lutheran community returned to Sweden. In 1988, at the request of the villagers, the church building was handed over to the Orthodox community, but the repair required significant funds, which were provided by the Swedish side on the terms of the revival of the Swedish Lutheran community in the village.
Now the Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel, whose interior combines Protestant and Orthodox motifs, is in common use by the Orthodox and Lutheran communities.
