Nikolaev Art Museum. V.V. Vereshchagin was opened in 1914, on the initiative of Prince N.A. Gedroits and through the mediation of the artist I.E. Repin, on the tenth anniversary of the death, during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin, a famous battle painter. The three floors of the museum exhibit: icons of the 17th-19th centuries, works by Ukrainian portrait painters of the 18th century, Ukrainian and Russian art of the 18th-early 20th centuries, Western European art of the 17th-early 20th centuries. The central one is the memorial hall of V.V. Vereshchagin, which showcases the works and personal belongings of the artist.
In 2009, in connection with the 95th anniversary of its founding, the art museum was awarded the silver medal of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine for merits in the promotion of art.
