Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Pechera
Ukraine, Nemyriv
The wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1762) stands on a high hill, above the Southern Bug River, in the village. Pechera.
Next to it is a bell tower made of stone, which a few years ago stood without a top and looked more like a medieval watchtower. A couple of years ago it was completed, whitewashed and used again for its intended purpose.
Another fifty meters further and a fantastic panorama opens up, on the edge of the plateau the steep slopes break straight down to the Southern Bug dotted with boulders. Right under your feet, under a layer of soil, are the remains of the foundations of a castle built in the 17th century. tyrannical Moldavian ruler Duca. Abandoned by Duca after the coup in Moldova, the castle fell into disrepair. In 1764, a stone from it went to the foundations and fence of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, and a century later a bell tower was built from the remains.
