Lyadovsky rock monastery
Lyadovsky Holy Useknovensky rock monastery
Ukraine, Mohyliv-Podilskyi
One of the most significant Christian shrines of Podolia stands on the border with Moldova. This is the Lyadovsky Monastery.
Almost a millennium ago, Anthony of Kiev-Pechersk came to these lands. The same holy elder, who later became the founder of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Something struck him with local landscapes - so he decided to justify a cave for himself, where he would pray and keep fasting. Soon other elders joined him. And so the Lyadovsky Monastery appeared.
“Few people know that the first ambassadors of Bogdan Khmelnitsky to the Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich were hegumen of the Lyadovsky Monastery Pavel and hieromonk Nikifor,” says Fr. Panteleimon, - and two more monks - Peter and Andrei. The revolutionary period for the Lyadovsky Monastery was a serious test. Local residents, helping the monks, decided to hide the bells. After some time, they came to the conclusion that they should be sent to Romania (at that time it was adjacent to Ukraine, controlling the territory of modern Moldova). They were transported at night, with the help of ropes they pulled the bells across the Dniester. However, about halfway through the river, the rope broke and the bells sank. So they stayed there. In 1998, these bells were seen by divers - silted, of course.
Under the Soviet Union, the Lyadovsky Monastery was used as an open-air museum. Excursions came here, the participants of which did not always treat the sights with due respect. On the territory of ancient monasteries there are always burial places - local monks and children under seven years old. Over time, the bones were on the surface. Imi, tells about. Panteleimon, visitors rushed - they say, whoever throws further is better. With the arrival of the brethren, all the remains were collected and buried in the fraternal ossuary.
In 1998, the brethren came to the temple. We decided: the shrine needs to be rebuilt. The limestone rock is slowly crumbling, and no one has carried out repairs, especially major ones. The brethren are trying to collect as much news about the monastery as possible - they are looking for it in the archives of different countries. There are records about the Lyadovsky Monastery in the Lvov archive, and in the Polish and Kiev archives,” says Fr. Panteleimon. — Even in Moscow. It just takes money to collect this information. For example, an extract from the metric book in the Kiev archive costs about 80 hryvnia. Only one line, and about 400 such lines concern our monastery! The inscriptions on the walls of the stone church tell visitors about the centuries-old history of Lyadov. Among the inscriptions scratched on limestone is the seal of the Russian emperor, archbishops and other no less famous pilgrims of the monastery. Some signatures date back to 1846. Now the monks are rebuilding another building - of white stone. The brethren will be housed on the first and second floors, and the functioning church will be on the third. With stone altar, iconostasis. And if all plans can be realized, Lyadov's church will be the only one with a stone dome in Ukraine. With the help of pilgrims, Fr. Panteleimon, it will be possible to rebuild the shrine. There will also be a bathhouse. And besides everything else, the water in these places is especially clean and sweet. Natural natural filter - flint - purifies water.
