Reserve Stone Graves
Complex Reserve Stone Graves
Ukraine, Mariupol
In the Donetsk region there is a mountainous country in miniature. So geologists call the unique reserve "Stone Graves". It is located in the Volodarsky district. There was a volcano here 2 billion years ago.
The reserve "Stone graves" - a branch of the Ukrainian steppe nature reserve - is one of the unique nature reserves of Ukraine: virgin steppe vegetation is protected here, and outcrops of crystalline rocks have no analogues within the Azov crystalline massif both in area and in the variety of environmental conditions .
The reserve is located on the southeastern outskirts of the Azov Upland, which is the eastern end of the Ukrainian crystalline shield. The upland is characterized by numerous outcrops of crystalline rocks - gneisses, magmatites, granites. Some rocky remains look like domed hills (Tokmak-Mogila, Belmak-Mogila, Korsak-Mogila), which rise to a height of 324 m above sea level, others form small ridges (Stone Graves). Scientists call "Stone Graves" the city of the dead. The reserve is surrounded by two rings of mounds - one with a diameter of 9 km, the second - 18 km. The most notable representatives of the ancient tribes were buried in them. Scientists say that the "Stone Graves" are unique in biological terms. Here you can find more than 500 varieties of plants. There are species that grow only in the Crimea, in the Alps and in this reserve. Two types of herbs are found nowhere else in the world.
