Cathedral of St. George

Archcathedral Cathedral of St. George
Ukraine, Lviv
St. George's Cathedral is the main Greek Catholic cathedral in Lviv, the main shrine of the UGCC. For a long time, the residence of the metropolitans of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was located on its territory. Located on St. Jura Square, 5.

The first temple was located on a mountain, later called Svyatoyurskaya, back in princely times. An Orthodox wooden church and a defensive monastery were built under Prince Lev Danilovich around 1280. After the destruction of both structures by the Polish king Casimir III (1340), a new Orthodox church was erected on this site in 1363-1437, a stone three-apse church-basilica in the Byzantine style.

Svyatoyura Cathedral was built in 1744-1770, it is considered a classic example of architecture of the Baroque period. Construction began in 1744 according to the project of Bogdan Meretin, after whose death the work was supervised by S. Fesinger (until 1764). Finishing work was completed in 1772. On the facade there are sculptures by Pinzel; the interior was decorated by sculptors S. Fesinger and M. Filevich, artists L. Dolinsky and Yu. Radivilovsky.
Opposite the cathedral of the cathedral are the chambers of the Greek Catholic Metropolitan (1772, architect K. Fesinger). Surrounding the chambers are capitular houses (19th century) and a fence with two gates (1765). A bell tower was built in the courtyard (1865).

From the time of its construction, the temple belonged to the Uniate Basilian order, and in 1816 a Greek Catholic archbishop was housed here. In 1946 the cathedral was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1990, the UGCC was returned. In April 1991, the head of the UGCC, Cardinal Miroslav-Ioann Lubachivsky, returned here. In August-September 1992, the remains of Patriarch Joseph Slipiy (1892-1984) were buried in the church, in the crypt of the cathedral next to the tombs of Metropolitans Andrei Sheptytsky (1865-1944) and Sylvester Sembratovich (1836-1898). Earlier, the remains of Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl were buried on the territory of the first church on Svyatoyurskaya Mountain.

The monumental architectural ensemble, which rises on St. George's Hill in Lviv, has long been the main cathedral of Ukrainian Greek Catholics. The first temple dates back to 1280 and has always been a holy place ever since. The complex includes a cathedral, a bell tower, metropolitan chambers and chapter houses, a large park-garden. 18th century sculptures on the church are masterpieces by John Pinzel. The interiors of the temple also impress with the richness and variety of iconography. Opposite the cathedral is the Palace of the Metropolitans, built by the architect Fessinger in the XVIII century in the Rococo style with some touches of classicism.

UNESCO World Heritage Site, located just a few minutes walk from the old part of the city. Inspiring architecture . . I liked everything - both outside and inside. In the evening, the cathedral is especially eye-catching, as the whole is correctly and accurately illuminated.
