Church of St. Nicholas, Church of the Intercession of the Virgin
Ukraine, Lviv
The Church of St. Nicholas (currently - the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin) is an architectural monument in Lviv. It is located in the central part of the city, on Mikhail Grushevsky Street, 2 (the former Soviet name of the street was Shcherbakova).
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was founded here in 1694 for the Order of the Trinitarians. In 1739-1745 the modern building was built. In 1745, the church became a parish church, and the monastery became a house of clergy.
The authorship of the project is attributed to the Italian F. Placidi. The builder was probably a trinitarian monk K. Granatsky, a native of Lublin.
The church is three-aisled, covered with semi-circular vaults with formwork. The facade is completed with pediments and volutes, traditional for their time. The planes of the facade are dissected by pilasters and significantly developed cornices. The interior is decorated with lush stucco, wood carvings and sculptures. The author of the stucco decoration, made in 1746, was the monk L. Pechitsky (from Podlasie). The altar wooden sculpture belongs to the master S. Fessinger.
An important monument of art is the Scholz-Wolfovich altar, made around 1595, located in the left nave. It comes from the Latin Cathedral, was made in the workshop of the sculptor G. Van Gutte.
