Sapieha Palace
Palace of the Princes of Sapieha
Ukraine, Lviv
The Palace of Princes Sapieha is an architectural monument in Lviv. Located on Copernicus street, 40a.
It was built for the princes of Sapieha according to the design of the architect A. Kugn in the French Baroque style of the 18th century. The building is two-story, with a mezzanine, the main volume has the shape of a square in plan, to which a rectangular outbuilding adjoins. A monumental fence with openwork metal gates separates the front yard from the street. The walls of the building are distinguished by soft plasticity, their surface is diversified by rustication and pilaster protrusions, cornices and interfloor belts.
A descendant of an old Lithuanian-Russian family, Adam Sapega, who ordered a palace for himself, was one of the most prominent sponsors of railway construction in Galicia. The construction of the palace cost almost as much as the construction of the Potocki Palace.
School No. 9 was located here for a long time. After restoration, the Lviv Regional Society for the Protection of Historical, Cultural and Architectural Monuments was located in the former Sapieha Palace.
