Central Church of Evangelical Christian Baptists
Church of St. Ursula
Ukraine, Lviv
The Central Church of Evangelical Christians-Baptists (former Church of St. Ursula) is an architectural monument in Lviv. It is located in the central part of the city, on Zelenaya street, 11.
Church of St. Ursula was founded in 1678. The building with two turrets and a concave facade is interpreted rather dryly. In the strict, devoid of decor, forms of the former church, one can feel the influence of northern classicism of the 17th century. The authorship of the project is attributed to the Dutchman G. Van Gameren.
In 1878, the building was handed over to the community of evangelists, in 1929 a plaque was installed on the building in memory of the 400th anniversary of the Protestant movement and in memory of the organization of the evangelical community in Lviv in 1778.
In the church in 1842, a funeral service was celebrated for the Russian General Wingenstein, a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812, who died while passing through Lvov.
In the 1930s, the house housed a cooperative of pensioners of state security agencies, which was engaged in the protection of private apartments, warehouses, banks, and enterprises. At the same time, trade unions were housed in the building.
The building was handed over to the community of Evangelical Christians-Baptists in the early 1990s, the reconstruction and restoration were completed in 1997. It is used as the central temple of the Lviv evangelical community.
