Chapel of the Three Saints
Chapel of the Three Saints
Ukraine, Lviv
The Chapel of the Three Hierarchs is part of the ensemble of the Assumption Church in Lviv, an architectural monument.
The architecture of the chapel intertwined the traditions of folk and Renaissance architecture. It was built by the architect Peter Krasovsky in 1578-1591. The chapel adjoins one side to the northern wall of the Assumption Church, the long side to the Kornyakt tower. After a fire in 1671, it was rebuilt again. In 1846-1847 the chapel was restored, at the same time it was connected to the church by a passage. Currently, the entrance to the Assumption Church from the street is closed, you can enter only through the chapel of the three saints.
The building of the chapel is small, rectangular in plan, pillarless, ending with three domes on closely placed polyhedral drums, which are crowned with Renaissance lanterns. Pilasters divide the facade into three parts, in the center is a carved stone portal, one of the best examples of architectural plasticity of the 16th-17th centuries. In the interior, the smooth white walls contrast with the 17th-century stucco work against the picturesque mosaic-like backdrop that covers the inner surface of the domes.
