Boim Chapel

Chapel Boimiv
Ukraine, Lviv
The Boim Chapel is a monument of Lviv architecture. It was built as a crypt in 1609-1617 (according to other sources between 1609 and 1615) for the Boim merchant family. At first, this territory belonged to the city cemetery. The construction was started by George Boim, a Lviv merchant and usurer of Hungarian origin, and completed by his son Pavel-George. The wall facing the Latin Cathedral is covered with intricate carvings, the interior is also decorated with alabaster carvings. Portraits of Georg Boim and his wife Jadwiga have been preserved on the eastern façade. The wall of the western facade is completely covered with stone carvings. The sculptural group "Pieta" by J. Pfister is of high artistic value - an outstanding work of Lviv art of the 17th century. The chapel bears a resemblance to the Sigismund Chapel near the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.

Every time I come to Lviv, I try to visit this chapel. I’ve never been inside and didn’t even know that they let me in, I’m just pleased with the external design of this building, which doesn’t look like a crypt at all ...On the one hand, it’s just like a house, from the side of black stucco, rather, something religious but not a cemetery. Although the black color and some kind of drama are present ...But at the same time, there is comfort and some kind of mystery. And life is seething nearby, cafes (and my favorite is Sweet Kavi with its cupcakes) .

There are more interesting places in Lviv (IMHO). But if you're nearby, it's worth a visit. Only with a guide, otherwise you will lose a lot. Therefore, advice - if you take one of the possible sightseeing tours around Lviv, then ask if a visit to the tomb of the Boims will be included in the tour and if they will charge you an additional fee for this, since a common scam during excursions is a separate fee for visiting some places.

The Boim Chapel seemed to me a very mystical place, at the same time somehow beneficially soothing. We booked a tour and part of it was a story about the chapel. She has a very interesting story and we got a good guide)) What else is interesting, we were in Lviv during the May holidays and somehow it happened that we rented an apartment, the windows of which went directly to the Chapel. So every morning we admired such a beautiful view. Who wants to repeat our experience, you can look for an apartment.

Unremarkable (in my opinion) architectural structure turned out to be so incredibly beautiful inside. There is an entrance fee, but it's worth it. Feelings are indescribable. Be sure to try to come here to feel, to feel what is difficult to describe in words. And for those who do not believe in "feelings", I will say that it is simply very pleasing to the eye.

In my opinion, before the tourist was not allowed to go inside. Now you can, although for 10 UAH. Entering the twilight, at first you can’t understand what you paid money for. But when the gaze is focused and you raise your head up, you forget not only about money, but also who you are, where you are and what century it is in the yard now! I was surprised to learn that the chapel barely survived during the Austrian rule in Lvov. The Austrians issued a decree on the transfer of all burials outside the boundaries of the central part of the city.
