Kornyakt Tower
Vezha Kornyakta
Ukraine, Lviv
The Kornyakt Tower is an architectural monument in Lviv, part of the ensemble of the Assumption Church. Located on Podvalnaya street, 9.
The tower was built as the bell tower of the Assumption Church, served as a defensive tower during the siege and as a fire guard watchpoint. It was built according to the project of the architect P. Barbon with the participation of P. Rimlyanin in 1572-1578 at the expense of the Greek merchant Konstantin Kornyakt.
The tower originally had three tiers of different heights and a three-stage tent completion. In 1672, during the Turkish siege, the bell tower was damaged by fire. It was rebuilt in 1695 by the architect P. Beber, who added another tier and a modern baroque finish with four twisted obelisks at the corners.
The building is made of stone, square in plan, polychromy was used in the decoration. The facades are decorated with Tuscan order pilasters with red arched piers. The height of the tiers gradually decreases, and precisely found proportions give the bell tower harmony and grace. In its beauty, the Kornyakt tower is on a par with the best buildings in Europe of its time.
