The local history museum in Nikopol, one of the oldest in the Dnepropetrovsk region, was opened in May 1919 as a folk museum of fine arts, in 1929 it was named after the outstanding scientist M.V. Lomonosov. Before World War II, the museum held about five thousand exhibits, most of which were lost during the evacuation in August 1941. The new museum exposition was opened on November 7, 1946, since 1997 the museum has become the Nikopol State Museum of Local Lore. In 1986, the museum was transferred to an old military barracks, the repair of which was delayed for a long time.

Valuable collections are kept among almost 45,000 exhibits: ceramics, items from the excavations of the Scythian settlement, Ukrainian towels, rare books, the oldest of which dates back to 1608, weapons and household items of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks. The fund of the scientific library of the museum includes more than 12 thousand books and brochures.
