Druzhkovsky stone forest, Stone trees
Ukraine, Kramatorsk
Druzhkovsky petrified trees are a geological monument of nature of national importance. It is located in the Konstantinovsky district of the Donetsk region near the city of Druzhkovka and the village of Alekseev-Druzhkovka.
The status of a natural monument was assigned by order of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR No. 780-r dated October 14, 1975. Area - 1 ha. It is an outcrop of petrified trees with a diameter of 1 meter in diameter.
The trees are araucaria, about 250 million years old. They grew in the forest of the Carboniferous geological period, then were uprooted by a hurricane and fell into the river. In the water, the trees were without contact with air and therefore did not decompose. Over time, a sea formed on the site of the forest. Druzhkovsky petrified trees were under a layer of sedimentary rocks, but sea water seeped into them. Sea water washed out organic substances from the trunks, instead of them mineral substances accumulated in the trunks. The petrification lasted for thousands of years.
In Druzhkovsky petrified trees, the cellular structure of plants is well distinguished if thin sections of trunks are examined under a microscope. In appearance, petrified trees are similar to freshly cut ones, only much heavier than wood and quartz crystals are visible. This natural monument is a very rare occurrence on a global scale. There are other similar petrified trees found in the Arizona desert in the USA.
Petrified trees are located on the slope of the beam and belong to the Druzhkovsko-Konstantinovskaya anticline. At a distance of 150-200 meters from them, the end support of the cable car of the Druzhkovsky Machine-Building Plant was built.
In 2008, Druzhkovka petrified trees were included in the Top-100 of the all-Ukrainian competition "Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine".
