Klevan Castle

Castle in Klevan, Klevan Castle
Ukraine, Klevan
The village of Klevan is located near the border of the Rivne and Volyn regions on the banks of the Stubla River. In historical documents, Klevan was first mentioned in 1458 as the property of Prince Czartoryski. However, according to historians, the settlement on the site of the current Klevan already existed in the 12th century and was called Kolyvan.

In 1475, Prince Fyodor Czartorysky, the headman of Lutsk, began building a castle on one of the high coastal capes, above the Stubla River, which was called "Gorodishche". The castle had three defensive corner towers: one wooden and two stone. The thickness of the walls of the towers, in some places, reached an unprecedented size - 3.8 meters. The castle was surrounded by a deep ditch filled with water, and powerful stone walls. The construction of the castle was completed in 1561. The main defensive function was performed by the western stone bastion. The eastern tower was used to store gunpowder and weapons.Across the deep ditch a four-arch bridge was thrown on strong supports.
In 1632, the castle was handed over to the Jesuits, who organized their collegium there. After their expulsion in 1773, when Klevan went to Austria, the castle stood empty for a long time, until Prince Konstantin Czartoryski, having decided to create a Polish gymnasium in Klevan, rebuilt the castle in 1817. The eastern wall was dismantled and two outbuildings appeared in its place where the school was located. In 1831 it was closed. Since 1834, the castle has been empty and falling apart without proper supervision. In 1860 the castle was sold to the Russian Tsar Alexander II. After that, the castle housed a military garrison. In 1915, during the hostilities, the castle was badly damaged.

After the Second World War, an NKVD prison was organized in the premises of the castle, and later, a medical and labor dispensary (LTP) for alcoholics. In the mid-90s of the twentieth century, the LTP was disbanded and since then the castle has been abandoned again, gradually collapsing over time and dismantled by local residents.
