Mariinsky Palace
Mariinsky Palace
Ukraine, Kyiv
The Mariinsky Palace is the ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine. It is located next to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The palace was built in 1744 by order of the Empress Elisabeth and designed by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The Mariinsky Palace is a vivid example of the Baroque style: expressive volumes, rich plasticity of facades. Under the guidance of Rastrelli's student, the Russian architect Ivan Michurin, the construction of the palace was finally completed in 1752. Together with I. Michurin, architects N. Vasiliev, M. Salnikov, P. Neelov, Y. Trubnikov, T. Nevsky and others, as well as invited foreign masters of the “brick and tile business” A. Demarco, K. Pelli worked on the construction of the palace , I.-A. Chamberlain.
Opposite the Mariinsky there is a park (since 1874). On the opposite side, the palace also frames the park (Royal Garden), which was founded in 1743 on the basis of the Regular Garden (perpendicular alleys).
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Mariinsky Palace was the residence of the governor-generals of the Kiev province. Until 1917, the palace was used as a Kiev residence for members of the imperial family.
During its history, the Mariinsky Palace was repeatedly reconstructed. A more significant reconstruction was carried out in 1868-1870 after a terrible fire that destroyed the second floor and all the front rooms of the palace. During the restoration of the palace, a stone floor was built on and the facade was decorated with new details, the interiors were renovated in the classicist style with elements of baroque and renaissance. During the Great Patriotic War, a bomb hit the Mariinsky Theater.
In 1945-1949 the palace was rebuilt under the guidance of the Ukrainian architect Pavel Alyoshin. At the same time, the facades of the palace did not undergo significant changes, and the interior premises were adapted to the needs of government and public organizations. In this regard, some rooms were regrouped and the interiors were somewhat changed.
In 1975, it was decided to restore the palace in forms as close as possible to the architecture of Rastrelli.
Important elements of the decoration of the palace are antique furniture, chandeliers, paintings by famous artists, fragments of wall paintings have been preserved in some rooms.
Now the historical building of the Mariinsky Palace represents Ukraine as a state residence (Presidential Palace). Official receptions and summits, award ceremonies, credentials by Ambassadors of foreign states, meetings of foreign delegations at the highest level are held here.
