The Assumption Cathedral was built in 1144 by Prince Vsevolod and is considered the same age as the city. The building is made in the Byzantine style. The cathedral was often used as a fortress. In 1678, it was burnt down by the Turks and rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century, when it acquired its present form.
Today, the Assumption Cathedral belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and regular services are held here.
