I have been to Kamenetz-Podolsky several times before. I really like this city. But if in the past I preferred to walk around the Old Town and the fortress, this time I decided to explore the New Town, which is located behind the bridge. A very beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was a discovery for me.
The majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the main Orthodox church in Kamenetz-Podolsky. The neo-Byzantine-style cathedral was built in 1893 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Podolia to Russia. The beautiful temple quickly became one of the main attractions not only of the New Town, but of the entire Kamyanets-Podilskyi. The temple had a large main dome and four semi-domes on the sides; a small bell tower was located above the western entrance.
The main altar of the cathedral was dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky, in memory of Alexander III, the southern altar bore the name of St. Catherine the Great Martyr, patroness of Catherine II, and the northern one - St. Nicholas. In the 1940s, the cathedral was destroyed. In the 2000s, work began on the restoration of the temple, which is now fully completed. Now the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the current temple of the UOC-MP.
If you are in Kamenets, I recommend not to bypass this interesting place. Be sure to set aside an hour to visit this cathedral.
