Kamianets-Podilsky fortress

Kamianets fortress, Old castle of Kamenetz-Podilskyi
Ukraine, Kamianets-Podilskyi
The Kamenets fortress is one of the most impregnable defensive structures in Ukraine. It was built in the XIV century on a high rocky bank of the river. Smotrych to protect the Turkish bridge - the only possible entrance to the city. The first known description of the Kamenets castle dates back to 1494. From the side of the city, it had a gate with a tower; the Polnye gate was built in the northern wall. The garrison was armed with 11 cannons and one large "tarrasnitsa".

In 1621, under the leadership of the royal engineer Theophilus Schomberg, the New Castle was built according to the Dutch model, adapted for defense in the conditions of artillery struggle. The new castle consisted of two earthen semi-bastions (casemates were located in them) and curtain walls, in front of which a dry moat was arranged. The system of dungeons has survived to this day, as well as most of the stone walls - escarpment and counterscarp.
The main struggle during the siege of the city by the Turks (August 12–26, 1672) took place here. There were about 1,000 defenders in the New Castle (in total, the city's garrison numbered about 1.5 thousand). The Turks, on the other hand, had a 5-fold advantage in artillery, and more than 80 times in manpower. The most powerful Turkish artillery in Europe sowed havoc, destroying fortifications and houses in the city. Every day, 400 cannonballs and 200 mortar grenades hit the New Castle. Turkish sappers were digging in order to land him in the air.

The besieged decided to retreat to the Old Castle. On August 25, the Turks blew up a mine under the Great Western Tower and launched an assault. The defenders repulsed him, but it became clear that the castle would not last long. The headman M. Pototsky and other leaders of the garrison decided to start negotiations with the Turks. They agreed to accept an honorable surrender. During the negotiations on August 26, the Chernaya tower took off. A gunpowder warehouse exploded, blown up by the head of the castle artillery Geckling. More than 500 people were killed, including "Hektor Kamenetsky" Yuri Volodievsky, who was considered the soul of defense.

Kamianets-Podilskyi cannot be imagined without the famous Old Castle - a unique fortification of the XI-XVIII centuries, built on a rocky promontory near a narrow isthmus, through which led the ancient main road to the Old Town. The 11th-century stone fortifications, built on the basis of even earlier ones, bore little resemblance to a modern mighty fortress with 11 towers connected by high walls. Remains of ancient Russian fortifications have been found in different parts of the castle: in the Day Tower - a fragment of a wall with loopholes, and the remains of a small, oval in plan tower - in the middle of the castle yard near Laska Tower.

In May 2019, my husband and I visited the castle. Impressions seeing for the first time were simply unreal. It is very beautiful in the evening, when the multi-colored illumination of the castle turns on. On the video you can see the beauty of the castle from all sides. https://www. youtube. com/watch? v=j4ot1Y5Qc9w Just got on the day of the city of Kamenets Podolsky (May). In the castle itself there was a costumed festive procession of the 16th-17th centuries. (lasted several days). They were supposed to launch a balloon, made similarly to that time, but due to rainy, stormy weather, the launch was canceled.

There is a legend about how the Turkish Sultan Osman, approaching Kamenets with his army, asked the locals: “Who built this city? ". “God Himself, ” the locals replied. “So let God himself receive it! ”- Osman answered and withdrew the army from Kamenets. At first glance, the Kamyanets-Podilsky fortress seems to be a miraculous object, but a fairy-tale one. Although all this beauty was built solely for defense. The fortress is surrounded by high walls with towers at each corner. To the left of the eastern gate is the Papal Tower, behind it is Kolpak, Tetchinska Tower, Lyatskaya Tower No.

The Old Fortress or the Old Castle of Kamyanets-Podilsky is one of the most outstanding monuments of the fortification art of Ukraine. And the only city-fortress in the world, located on an island with an area of .121 hectares. Now the name "Old Castle" is more often used, although formally this fortress was a castle - the residence of a feudal lord only at the very beginning of its existence, under the princes Koryatovichi. It was one of the most powerful and fortified fortresses of its time.
