Holy Spirit Cathedral
Holy Spirit Cathedral
Ukraine, Kherson
The Holy Spirit Church is a cathedral, since 1947, a cathedral in Kherson in the name of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The church was laid out in plan with a cross with a colonnade on all sides in 1804, under a one-time large donation. Due to a further lack of funds, the construction lasted until 1835, and two aisles of the temple were consecrated in 1836. The Holy Spirit Church was called "Privoznaya", as it was built near the city market, and it was considered the richest and most beautiful in Kherson. In March 1922, all valuables and bells were removed from the church, and the five-tiered bell tower was not preserved. In September 1937, the temple was adapted for a flour warehouse.
In August 1944, the Holy Spirit Church was returned to the believers, who began its restoration, but the frescoes could not be preserved. In 1955-1956, icons of Saints, Martyrs and Reverends were painted for the cathedral by Odessa artists. In 1995, a three-tiered bell tower was erected.
