Greek Sophia Church
Ukraine, Kherson
Greco-Sophia Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest church in Kherson. The Greeks who settled in Kherson built in the 18th century an Orthodox stone church with a wooden dome sheathed with roofing iron, consecrated on November 10, 1780. In the upper part of the dome there are wooden sculptures of the apostles. In 1808, the church was partially replaced with a stone one. In the interior of the Greco-Sophia Church, wall paintings, a unique carved iconostasis, and wooden sculptures have been preserved. A bell tower rises near the temple, in the niches of which wooden sculptures of the apostles are placed.
