Old university building
Governor's Palace, Old University Building
Ukraine, Kharkiv
The old building of Kharkiv University was built in 1777 as a travel palace of Empress Catherine II. Then the residence of the governor-general was located in the palace building. In 1804, after a partial reconstruction, the building was handed over to the newly opened Kharkov Imperial University. The old university building is an architectural monument of the 18th century - the earliest classicist building in the city. The central part of the facade of a two-story brick building is decorated with a balcony on brackets. The plaque on the wall reminds us that the great scientist I. I. Mechnikov studied here from 1862 to 1864.
Now the building houses the main building of the Ukrainian Engineering and Pedagogical Academy.
