The salt lake near the village of Antonovka in the Kharkiv region arose as a result of the release of natural gas from great depths and under high pressure to the surface during the drilling of an exploratory well. The ground around the drilling rig collapsed and formed a crater up to 60 meters in diameter, which quickly filled with water passing through the salt lens. Thus, a very deep and very salty lake was formed, in which there are no living creatures and which does not freeze in winter. The water in the lake, due to salinity and the presence of trace elements that have fallen into the water from the bowels of the earth, has healing properties and helps in the treatment of arthrosis, osteochondrosis and radiculitis.
In half a century, the lake became less saline and sank several meters, resulting in the formation of cliffs in which a colony of sand martins found shelter.
