Svobody Square is the largest square in Ukraine, 750 meters long and 125 meters wide. Until 1991, it was called "Dzerzhinsky Square", after Ukraine gained independence - "Independence Square", since 1998 - "Freedom Square". In the center of the square in 1965 a square was created, in which in 2014 a cross was erected on the site of the monument to V.I. Lenin for the 215th anniversary of the Kharkiv diocese.
Among the well-known buildings on the Square are the 11-storey Kharkiv Hotel, the Palace of Youth, the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, the main and northern buildings of the V.N. .
