The square was founded in 1659 as a fairground - the annual August Assumption Fairs were held here. The name of the square changed several times, depending on historical events, until in 1996 it became known as Constitution Square. On August 22, 2012, the Monument to the Independence of Ukraine was opened on it, which became the main dominant of the square.
Along the perimeter of the square there are several interesting buildings - architectural monuments. Among them: the Puppet Theater designed by the famous architect A.N. Beketov, the Palace of Labor and the former Commercial Bank built at the beginning of the 20th century, the House of Techniques by A.N. Beketov, the City Council - the former City Duma, the building of 1885.
