Church of the Archangel Michael

Archangel Michael Church in Rakitnoe
Ukraine, Kharkiv
The first written mention of the Archangel Michael's Church dates back to 1712. Most likely, it was a wooden church, because a new mention of the church indicates its construction in 1762, which was also wooden. This is how the church is described in the clergy's statements for 1804 “The church is wooden. Built in 1762. Not exactly strong. A stone one is being built in its place. There is only one throne of the Archangel Michael. The bell tower is wooden, strong, there are five bells on it: 1st - 14 pounds and 15 pounds, 2nd - 2 pounds and 2 pounds, 3rd - 1 pood and 20 pounds, 4th and 5th half a pound each " .
In 1805, at the expense of Colonel Mikhail Matveyevich Kulikovsky, a new stone church was built, consecrated on November 8 (according to the old style) by His Grace Christopher (Sulima) Bishop of Sloboda-Ukrainian and Kharkov. The new building is a real marvel of architecture. Outwardly, the temple is round with two porticos protruding from the side of the porch and the altar. The first portico has a ledge, the second one adjoins the body of the building with its columns more closely. It is crowned with a dome on a drum with windows cut into it. Grigory Lukomsky wrote: “The church is connected with the house into one architectural whole. Her composition is very noble and beautiful. The temple was very richly decorated. The interior was decorated with: an Empire-style lectern lattice, a large silver chandelier, a small chandelier in the Elizabethan Baroque style, local icons in ancient carved frames (obviously local schools), the face of the Savior, such as Guido Reni, in a silver frame. The iconostasis was blue with golden stripes (later it was all gilded). Instead of the icon "The Last Supper" there was a star, instead of "Golgotha" - "Lord of Hosts". Later these icons were replaced by others. It should be noted that a number of persons from the Kulikovsky family were buried inside the church and monuments-tombstones were erected to them.
Even more graceful was the two-tiered stone bell tower erected near the temple in 1827. Its first tier was surrounded by columns, the second was decorated with flat pilasters. Niches are cut in the body of the bell tower, the proportion of the ringing window is a narrow arch. The arch gave the impression of airiness. On the stone bell tower, as well as on the old wooden one, there were also five bells: the 1st - 46 pounds and 30 pounds, the 2nd - 9 pounds and 31 pounds, the 3rd - 4 pounds, the 4th - 1 pounds, 5 th - 30 pounds. A new stone fence instead of a wooden one was built in 1828.
From 1849 to 1895, the church had three altars: the main one in the name of the Archangel Michael was cold, and two in the choir stalls were warm: on the right side in honor of the Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands and the Mother of God of Akhtyrka, and on the left - in the name of the holy martyrs Sophia, Clement and Agafangel. ( F40, inventory 110, items 1129, 1138, 1142, 1144a, 1146, 1148, 1787, 1796) two thrones on them. It must be said that the external view of the church was badly damaged in 1895, when the profile of the cornices was distorted by repairs and as a result they got a rough look. The domes on the church and the bell tower were also damaged. Previously, they were exactly spherical, when replacing rafters and battens, they became multifaceted. The dome on the upper drum, instead of being round, was made like an onion. The two-tone coloring of the temple was replaced by solid white. Before, the white columns stood out beautifully against the dark red tone of the plaster walls. The alteration, as if caused by cracks from the strong pressure of heavy (400-500 pounds) stoves, was also reflected in the internal appearance of the temple: with the blessing of Bishop Ambrose, not only the choirs were removed, but also the royal gates, which were “dilapidated” were redone. The church and the bell tower were repeatedly repaired. “In 1878, the iconostasis from the main church was renewed, a new floor was arranged, and a new throne was also arranged, which was consecrated on November 4th through the efforts of the priest, elder and parishioners”
“In 1900, the church and the bell tower were repaired: the crosses and domes were re-glazed, the roofs were painted with green paint. In 1904 the iconostasis was repaired, painted with white paint and polished. The icons in the iconostasis were painted again. The new Royal Gates were also arranged in the iconostasis. The floor in the Holy Altar and on the salt is made again. Inside the temple, the walls were whitewashed and the plaster was fixed. In 1905, the floor was painted in the Holy Altar and throughout the church, all external and internal doors, windows, lattices and four icon cases, the walls below inside the church were painted with oil paint. The buildings of the church and the bell tower are very durable. A solid stone fence was built around the church, fixed and whitewashed in 1905. For the burial of the dead, there are specially designated cemeteries required by law, fenced off.

In 1989, the temple found its rightful owners. The building was handed over to the community of believers.
