Kharkov State Art Museum, founded in 1805, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in Ukraine. The museum is housed in a building built in 1912 in a classical style with baroque elements, designed by academician A.N. Beketov. Its 25 halls contain works of pre-revolutionary art, including a collection of 16th-century icons, art of the Soviet period, Western European art, and arts and crafts of the 16th-20th centuries. Among them are paintings by I.K. Aivazovsky, K.P. Bryullov, N.N. Repin. In 1991, the department of folk art of Slobozhanshchina was organized, with finds obtained during expeditions around the region. The department became the
Museum of Folk Art of Sloboda, a branch of the art museum. The structure of the Kharkiv Art Museum also includes the
Parkhomovsky History and Art Museum, with its unique collection of paintings.
