Kharkiv State Veterinary Academy was founded in 2001 on the basis of the Veterinary Institute, leading its history from the Higher Veterinary School, founded in 1804. The KhGZVA base consists of 12 educational buildings, an experimental farm, an educational and scientific center for animal husbandry and crop production, a library with a fund of 240 thousand volumes, a cultural center, a stadium, a gym and a shooting gallery, and a medical center. Since 1991, an equestrian sports complex has been operating at the academy, on the basis of which the Horse Theater operates, which performs at ceremonial events at the academy in different districts of the Kharkiv region.
The Academy previously had its own zoo, which was inhabited by swans and ostriches, camels, buffaloes, wolves, llamas and other animals and birds. Most of the animals were transferred to the Kharkov Zoo. On the territory of KhGZVA there are enclosures with birds - ostriches, peacocks, swans, pheasants and guinea fowls, chickens. Visiting the zoo is free.
