Gorelik's House
Merchant Gorelik's House
Ukraine, Donetsk
Gorelik's House (82, Oktyabrskaya St.) is a monument of architecture and urban planning in Donetsk. Built between 1901-1905 for the merchant Gorelik. The solution of the facade part of the building is made in the Art Nouveau style. The corner of the building is emphasized by a faceted tower with a pointed dome. The tower used to house a chapel. The building stands out among other Donetsk buildings with bizarre outlines of balconies, dynamic window framing, discreet façade decor and ceramic tile cladding inserts.
Until the October Revolution of 1917, the building housed an underground printing house of the Bolsheviks. In the first years of Soviet power, the Tudorovsky club with a large dance hall was located in Gorelik's house, which was popular at that time. Then the radio center was located in the building. Since 1946, the building has housed the regional department of local industry.
There is a version that Vladimir Mayakovsky read his poems to an audience of five thousand from the balcony of Gorelik's house.
In 1977, the architect A. Mishchenko from the Institute "Donbassgrazhdanproekt" developed a project for an extension to the western end of the mansion. The extension did not violate the general style of the building.
Currently, Gorelik's house houses the Spetsshakhtoburenie association and the regional office of PrivatBank.
