Chortkovsky castle
Chortkiv Castle
Ukraine, Chortkiv
The Chortkovsky castle at the foot of the Vygnanskaya Mountain near the Seret River was built in 1610, on the site of the wooden fortress of the Chortkovsky princes destroyed by the Tatars, by the new owner of these lands, Stanislav Golsky. The thickness of the walls of the fortifications of the castle reached 2 meters, towers were erected at the four corners of the defensive perimeter - two have survived to this day. Behind the walls of the walls there was a palace and economic buildings. But the castle had an extremely unfortunate location - there is a hill nearby, from where the enemy could observe the castle and fire at it.
In 1779, the castle, which had lost its defensive significance, was leased by the owners to the Austrian government for storage. Since 1815, the castle housed the city prison, then the Carmelite Order of the Sisters of Mercy. In 1937, the castle was bought by the Podolsk Tourist and Local History Association, which made a partial reconstruction of the castle. After the transfer of these lands to the USSR, a motor depot was located in the castle. Since 2010, the Chortkiv Castle has been taken under protection by the National Reserve "Castles of the Ternopil Region", which conducts archaeological research and conservation work here.
