In the middle of the XIX century among Chernivtsi Armenians there was a need to have their own church. For its construction in 1864 a committee was created, which included the most authoritative members of the Armenian community. Among them were famous people in Chernivtsi, namely a member of the public council of the city, and later the first mayor of Chernivtsi Yakub Petrovich, Ludwig Mikuli - brother of the famous musician Karol Mikuli and others. The Czech architect Josef Hlavka was invited to design the church, at which time he supervised the construction of the future Metropolitan's residence. Therefore, the figurative language chosen to create this architectural masterpiece is inevitably guessed at the distinctive features of the Armenian Church. The same building materials were used: facing brick, hewn stone, ceramics.

Construction of the church began in 1869 in the historic Armenian quarter. In the process of building the temple of J.
Glavka, who also took care of the construction, was forced to make some adjustments to the initial project due to constant financial difficulties. In particular, the middle tower had to be made lower, so it turned out not as impressive as it looked on the plan. However, the Armenian community of Chernivtsi managed to achieve its goal - a miracle temple, the work of the genius Josef Hlavka, raised its pointed spiers above the laziness of the old merchant quarter. On October 9.1875, the Armenian church was solemnly consecrated under the title of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

In the architectural form of the Armenian Church, Josef Hlavka originally combined elements of Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic styles, which was characteristic, in particular, of medieval Bukovynian monasteries, according to the traditions of Armenian cult architecture, vividly represented in the 11th century Assumption Cathedral in Lviv.
And thanks to the wonderful acoustics, the church was first used as a concert hall: there were evenings of church singing and music, the organ sounded.
