The square is located on the territory of the Old Russian Foregorod between Hetman Polubotka and Shevchenko streets, as well as Mstislavskaya and Red Square. The most beautiful Pyatnitskaya church is also located here. The square has the shape of an irregular rectangle.

The park named after Bogdan Khmelnitsky is being transformed. And this is very pleasing, because the place in the city center should be in good condition for the joy of the city's residents and tourists (which Chernihiv really dreams of, but for now ...we wait, sir ... ).
The square is located next to a significant place in the city - Red Square (where the administration is located, another square with a fountain and the City Council and the National Bank) behind the Drama Theater and how many years I have been living here, the question has always arisen - why is it in such a shabby form? After all, this is the place to take a walk after a performance at the theater or a trip to a cafe. You go around the theater and rest your eyes on the fifth point of the statue. I just want to turn around and leave.
It was completely incomprehensible - who conceived this?
But it turned out - not everything is so simple, there is an urban legend (maybe true). They say that opposite the monument was the city committee of the party, so the monument could not stand with its back to it. Therefore, the authorities forced the authors of the project to change the angle - they turned the monument with its back to the theater and the church. So for many years he met the guests of the city - with his back. In May 2017, the monument was turned 180 - with its back to Moscow and facing Europe (but the monument was not touched). Now the hetman faces the church, the theater and the central Red Square of Chernihiv, as its authors conceived more than 60 years ago. And, in my opinion, if you do not take into account the political background, this is a very correct decision, so the design of the square has become more logical and solid.
The old asphalt was removed, the paths were leveled and covered with tiles. We also made tracks for skateboarders and rollerbladers.
We increased the number of benches, planted new grass, put old trees in order.
Interestingly, while working on this project, a general plan of this territory from 1961 was found in the storerooms of the Chernihiv Museum-Reserve. Its author was the architect Baranovsky, who was then engaged in the restoration of the Pyatnitskaya church destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. In the project of Baranovsky, an artificial reservoir was to be located on the territory between the Pyatnitskaya Church and Shevchenko Street!
They didn’t make a pond (probably, fortunately), but they did make 3 fountains with color music (we like fountains and have already built or updated a total of 5-6 pieces).

In general, at the moment the result is already very positive - the square is filled with life and joy, here you want to take a walk or relax, look at the fountains and cozy surroundings. The renovated square has already become one of the interesting places in Chernihiv and liked by the residents, who are now walking here a lot. Tourists should also like the square, who can take a break here and admire the old church, monument, theater and other sights nearby.
