Buchatsky Vasilian Monastery
Ukraine, Buchach
The Greek Catholic monastery of the Fathers Vasilian in Buchach was built on the hill of the Fedor tract in 1753 on the initiative of Count Nikolai Pototsky. The monastic complex consists of the Exaltation of the Cross Church, the bell tower, the cells and the building of the Collegium. St. Josaphat. The temple, built in the late Baroque style, is decorated with two five-tiered towers, which make the church the main dominant of the Old Town. The interior preserved a valuable iconostasis and six wooden sculptures by the Lviv master Nikolai Filevitch, pilasters with gilded capitals of the Corinthian order, tempera painting of the 18th century on religious themes.
In 1946, the temple was closed and began to collapse. On April 28, 1993, the monastery was officially returned to the Basilian Fathers of Saint Josophat, who began its restoration. Since 1995, a historical and philosophical lyceum for future clergy has been operating at the monastery.
