St. Nicholas Cathedral
St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Nicholas Cathedral
Ukraine, Berdychiv
St. Nicholas Cathedral, the main Orthodox church of Berdichev, was built in 1908 in the Rococo style, after the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, on the site of the wooden Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, built earlier at the expense of the owner of the city, Varvara Zawisz-Radzivil. A three-tiered bell tower was erected nearby, the cathedral complex was surrounded by a metal fence. From 1921 to 1937, renovationists served in the church, advocating the democratization of church administration and the modernization of worship, and in 1938 the church was closed for a granary. After the return of the temple to the Church, in 1996 it was renamed St. Nicholas Cathedral. The icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is kept in the cathedral; its interior is richly decorated with wall paintings.
