Church of St. Barbara
Church of St. Barvari
Ukraine, Berdychiv
The Church of St. Barbara is a temple of the Berdychiv parish of the Kiev-Zhytomyr Catholic diocese - a national monument of architecture and history. The baroque church was erected in 1826 on the site of an early wooden chapel of the Mother of God of Berdychiv, built by Varvara Radzivil, who owns Berdichev. At the expense of the Radzivils, an organ was installed in the church, on which, according to legend, the composer Frederic Chopin played. In 1850, the writer Honore de Balzac and Countess Evelina Ganskaya were married in the church, and in 1857 the famous English writer Joseph Conrad was baptized here. In Soviet times, the church was used as a gym, for which they made a second floor inside. Currently, the church has been returned to the Catholic community, a Sunday school operates under it, and the Berdichevskaya Madonna charitable legion operates.
