turtle farm

On the northern coast of Zanzibar is the Mnarani Natural Aquarium. Translated from Swahili, Mnarani means "place of the lighthouse". The aquarium was opened in 1993, with the support and assistance of the conservation authorities, with the aim of studying, treating and rescuing turtles caught in fishing nets. In Zanzibar, sea turtles often get caught in fishing nets and are injured. Also, locals often kill turtles for souvenirs. In order to increase the population of turtles, eggs are kept here and these reptiles are grown up to a certain age. Grown up baby turtles are marked and released into the wild.

From the village of Kendwa, walking along the beach, we reached Nungwi in about 40 minutes. Refusing, we found a turtle farm near the lighthouse with the help of a map. At the entrance, dirt is everywhere, a lot of locals, and a few tourists. Admission $10, as for me, it's expensive. The guide is a nice guy who speaks good English. The territory is small, a self-formed pond with sea water, and many turtle families, large and small turtles, live in it. You can feed them with seaweed, watch. They did not dare to swim with them, due to sanitation reasons.

Wonderful place. During the tour you will be told everything about turtles (how and why they get into the aquarium, what happens to them here). Everyone can feed the turtles with seaweed (just be careful, they bite), you can take the turtle in your arms. The most daring tourists can swim in the company of turtles in the lagoon. An employee of the aquarium throws algae around you and turtles come to eat. One even confused my colorful swimsuit with food and bit me on the side (no pain). In addition to turtles in the aquarium, there are several crocodiles in a cage, a whale skeleton.
