The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art is located in the former palace of Ibrahim Pasha (16th century) on
Sultanahmet Square. The museum was opened in 1914, but was then called the Efkafi Islamie Museum (Museum of the Islamic Foundation) and huddled in the building of the dining room
Suleimaniye Mosque. The museum received its current name after the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, and moved to the palace in 1938.
The collection of exhibits includes more than 40,000 exhibits and they are divided into seven large expositions: carpets, manuscripts and calligraphy, wood, stone, glass and ceramics, art forging and an ethnography section. Particularly interesting are the personal items and decorations of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire, historical documents and a unique collection of carpets. Here you can also see handicrafts of nomads, clothes, household utensils, works of art (vases, clay tablets with drawings, tapestries) and even copies of yurts.
The museum is included in the Museum Pass Istanbul program.
