Florence Nightingale Museum
Florence Nightingale Museum, Selimiye KIslasI, Florence Nightingale Müzesi, Selimiye Barracks
Turkey, Istanbul
The Florence Nightingale Museum is located in the Selimee Barracks, but you can get into it only by prior request, since the entrance to the territory of the barracks is closed due to its military significance. The museum is dedicated to the English sister of mercy Florence Nightingale, who during the Crimean War cared for wounded soldiers in this building (formerly a British military hospital). The first floor is completely dedicated to the history of the Crimean War: unique and rare photographs of the war years, letters from officers and soldiers, diaries and memoirs of battle participants. The second and third floors are dedicated to Nightingale herself. Here are the rooms where Florence lived and worked, her personal belongings, letters, documents, medallions, awards and gifts from grateful convalescent soldiers, even the operating room where she assisted has been preserved. Every evening she walked around the wards with a lamp to examine the patients, and she was called a kind and bright angel. This lamp is also displayed in the museum.
